Years ago I had acreage on the north shore of Kauai, over Hanalei Bay. I purchased the property as flat land with only a few trees. In Hawaii, you can simply bury a coconut, and in a few years you have a coconut tree. I fell in love with how easy it is to garden there.
I had a production company in those years and spent the days working in the garden while on calls. I planted hundreds of fruit trees, palms and most importantly, every variety of gardenias I could find.
I brought flat boxes of flowers, fruits, fronds and branches in each day and made tablescapes. Huge bowls of limes and floating white flowers made me so happy. My daughter and I would fill the house after school and then lay on the sun porch and paint.
Those days deeply imprinted me with a deep love for harvesting the offerings of the day. “Gifts from the garden” was the inspiration for High Camp years later.
Today, choosing the most perfect stems to enjoy in full grandeur still delights. Like a chef planning a meal around the most ideal ingredients in season, it only makes sense to offer the days’ most inviting blooms.
